Cleaning Up

I’ve been working on a blog for Becky Edwards, my state representative, that she wants to use to communicate with constituents. As part of that I have been looking at themes and plugins to help implement the features she is looking for. That led me to Subscribe2 which offers email subscription functionality through the blog. I have decided to try that out in place of feedblitz and see how it works. I figure it will be easier to tend on my own site.

I’m hoping that it is a positive experience for my few subscribers.

  1. I used Subscribe2 for a while and ended up dumping it in favor of FeedBurner’s e-mail subscription service. Subscribe2 required an upgrade with every WordPress upgrade and often sent duplicate messages out. Plus FeedBurner provides a lot of cool stats and does great feed replacement.

    • That’s good to know Jesse. I actually arrived at Subscribe2 because FeedBurner would not allow for importing a list of email addresses – that’s not something I need here, but it is something that Rep. Edwards needs.

I’ll be keeping my eyes open about how Subscribe2 acts for me. If it is not simple or consistent I will be dumping it as well. Of course, with automatic upgrades for plugins (a feature that exists in newer versions of WordPress than you are running) it might be easier for me to manage than it was for you.

  2. Well… I have issues with WP’s plugin upgrades too, specifically that it requires FTP. I leave FTP disabled and only turn it on temporarily when I can’t download what I need through the terminal or HTTP.

    • Is that with the automatic upgrades (the one click upgrades provided in WP 2.5 – or possibly even as far back as WP 2.3). I have not paid much attention to what is required, I just know that all I have to do when upgrading is click a link and wait 30 seconds to have the new version installed and activated.

      • Yeah, that’s the plugin upgrades. It’s been that way in my install of both 2.5 and 2.6 and I haven’t seen anything that indicates an alternate method of setting it up. Part of the problem is that I roll my own server and need to know what settings should be enabled… settings that are apparently super-duper secret.

  3. David Miller! Apparently you have a blog! I’ve been thinking about you and your family lately, missing you, wishing for an update! How are ya?

    • I’m doing great. We are happily situated in the southeast portion of Bountiful and I work in downtown Salt Lake now. Apparently I have a blog, actually I have two, Laura has another and I have blogs set up for the kids although they don’t really get used yet.

As I recall, you guys are up in Idaho. I’d love to hear an update on your family as well.
